Chapter 11 of Writing Workshop

Chapter 11:  Yearlong Horizons:
Planning a yearlong writing workshop requires taking a broader look at the day to day writing projects.
Week 1:  August:  Set the tone:
Start the year off teaching procedures and routines.   Set up daily writing time, expectations and procedures.
Week 5 September:  Time to celebrate
By the end of the first month, make sure that all students have published at least one writing.  Keep it simple.
Week 9;  October:  Time to pause
Have students reflect on the writing they have done.  They can go through their daily journals  and set new goals for themselves over the next term.
Week 14:  November:  Stretch your writers:
Offer new challenges to the classes.  Change of genre study where the focus is on qualities of writing specific to one kind of writing: poetry, picture book writing, fiction, biography/autobiography.
Week 18:  December:  Establish Closure:
Culminate genre study in a celebration of finished work.   Do reflection.   Do a self assessment and set new goals.
Week 19:  January:  Begin the Year Anew
Start over with new students.  Repeat procedures and routines.  Set time for writing.
